He went to celebrate on the touchline with coach Simone Inzaghi after meeting a flicked-on corner at the back post.

“The coach worked with Ciro Immobile at Lazio, who scored a lot of goals like that. I often take that position, but I also just as often forget! I did it properly this time.”

Thuram arrived at Inter as more of an attacking winger than a centre-forward, but is changing his game at club level.

“I started this role at Inter and I am improving, but have a lot that still needs to be done better. I am trying to learn all I can from Lautaro Martinez and Marko Arnautovic.”

Inter are in the Champions League next with Bayer Leverkusen, so former Borussia Monchengladbach man Thuram was asked for advice on the Bundesliga title holders.

“Bayer have changed a lot since I was last in Germany, they are under a different coach and coming off a sensational campaign. They are strong, but we are going for the victory.”
